Shrimp Browned Rice

Posted on April 29, 2025

Here’s a flavorful and satisfying recipe for Shrimp Browned Rice — a savory dish with juicy shrimp, perfectly seasoned rice, and a hint of caramelized depth. Think of it as a comforting fusion of fried rice and a Southern-style browned rice dish.

🍤 Shrimp Browned Rice

📝 Ingredients:

  • 1 lb large shrimp (peeled and deveined)
  • 2 cups cooked brown rice (preferably day-old)
  • 2–3 tbsp oil (vegetable, sesame, or olive oil)
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/2 bell pepper (red or green), chopped
  • 2 green onions, sliced (reserve some for garnish)
  • 2 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tbsp oyster sauce (optional, for umami depth)
  • Salt & pepper, to taste
  • 1/2 tsp smoked paprika or Cajun seasoning (optional for heat)
  • Fresh parsley or cilantro (optional garnish)

👩‍🍳 Instructions:

1. Cook Shrimp:

  • Season shrimp lightly with salt, pepper, and paprika or Cajun seasoning.
  • Heat 1 tbsp oil in a skillet over medium-high heat.
  • Sauté shrimp for 1–2 minutes per side until pink and opaque. Remove and set aside.

2. Sauté Aromatics:

  • In the same pan, add more oil if needed.
  • Sauté onion, garlic, bell pepper, and white parts of green onion until softened and slightly browned (5–7 minutes).

3. Brown the Rice:

  • Add the cooked rice to the pan. Spread it out and let it sit for 1–2 minutes without stirring to let it “brown” slightly.
  • Stir, then repeat once or twice to develop a golden, slightly crispy texture.

4. Season:

  • Add soy sauce and oyster sauce. Stir well to coat the rice.
  • Taste and adjust seasoning — add a little more soy or salt if needed.

5. Combine Shrimp & Finish:

  • Add shrimp back to the pan, along with green onion tops.
  • Stir everything together and heat through for 1–2 minutes.

6. Serve:

  • Garnish with fresh parsley, green onion, or even a squeeze of lime.

🍽️ Tip:

For extra flavor, toss in a handful of frozen peas or chopped cooked bacon, or top with a fried egg!
