Pan Fried Chicken with Cream Gravy ๐Ÿ—

Posted on March 9, 2025
Pan-fried chicken with cream gravy sounds delicious! Here’s a simple recipe to make it:

Ingredients:

For the Chicken:

  • 4 bone-in, skin-on chicken thighs (or breasts if preferred)
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 1 tsp paprika
  • 1 tsp dried thyme (optional)
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk (for dipping)

For the Cream Gravy:

  • 2 tbsp unsalted butter
  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 cups whole milk (or half-and-half for richer gravy)
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder (optional)
  • 1/2 tsp dried thyme (optional)

Instructions:

For the Chicken:

  1. Prepare the Chicken: Pat the chicken dry with paper towels. Season with salt and pepper on both sides.

  2. Make the Dredging Mixture: In a shallow bowl or plate, combine the flour, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, thyme, and a pinch of salt and pepper.

  3. Dip the Chicken: Pour the buttermilk into a separate bowl. Dip each piece of chicken in the buttermilk, then dredge it in the flour mixture, pressing lightly to ensure an even coating.

  4. Pan-Fry the Chicken: Heat about 1/4 cup of vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Once the oil is hot (test by dropping a little flour into the oilโ€”it should sizzle), carefully add the chicken, skin-side down. Fry the chicken for about 5-7 minutes per side or until golden brown and crispy. The internal temperature should reach 165ยฐF (75ยฐC). Transfer the cooked chicken to a plate lined with paper towels to drain.

For the Cream Gravy:

  1. Make the Roux: In the same skillet you cooked the chicken in, melt the butter over medium heat, scraping up any leftover bits from the chicken. Once the butter is melted, whisk in the flour, and cook for about 1-2 minutes until it turns a light golden brown.

  2. Add Milk: Slowly whisk in the milk, ensuring no lumps form. Continue to cook, whisking constantly, until the gravy thickens (about 3-5 minutes). If it gets too thick, you can thin it out with a little more milk.

  3. Season the Gravy: Season with salt, pepper, garlic powder, and thyme to taste.

  4. Serve: Spoon the gravy over the crispy chicken or serve it on the side for dipping.

Enjoy! ๐Ÿ—

The crispy, juicy chicken paired with rich, creamy gravy is a comforting, soul-satisfying meal. You can serve it with mashed potatoes, rice, or some greens on the side!
