Classic Steak and Mashed Potatoes

Posted on March 7, 2025

A classic steak and mashed potatoes dish is a timeless comfort food combo! Here’s a simple and delicious recipe to make a juicy steak paired with creamy mashed potatoes:

Ingredients:

For the Steak:

  • 2 ribeye or sirloin steaks (about 1-inch thick)
  • Salt and pepper (to taste)
  • 2 tbsp olive oil or vegetable oil
  • 2 tbsp butter
  • 2 garlic cloves, smashed
  • Fresh rosemary or thyme (optional)

For the Mashed Potatoes:

  • 2 pounds potatoes (Yukon Gold or Russet potatoes work best)
  • 4 tbsp butter
  • 1/2 cup milk (or more for desired creaminess)
  • Salt and pepper (to taste)
  • 2 cloves garlic (optional, for flavor)
  • Chives or parsley (optional, for garnish)

Instructions:

1. Prepare the Mashed Potatoes:

  1. Peel and chop the potatoes into evenly sized chunks.
  2. Boil the potatoes: Place the potatoes in a large pot of salted water and bring it to a boil. Reduce the heat and simmer for 15-20 minutes or until the potatoes are fork-tender.
  3. Drain the potatoes well, then return them to the pot.
  4. Mash the potatoes: Add butter, milk, salt, and pepper. You can use a potato masher for a chunky texture or a hand mixer for a smoother consistency. Add more milk if needed to reach your desired creaminess.
  5. If desired, stir in roasted garlic (or fresh garlic, sautéed in butter) for extra flavor. You can also garnish with chopped chives or parsley.

2. Cook the Steak:

  1. Season the steaks generously with salt and pepper on both sides.
  2. Preheat a skillet (preferably cast iron) over medium-high heat. Add the oil and heat until shimmering.
  3. Cook the steaks: Place the steaks in the skillet and sear for 3-5 minutes on each side, depending on how well done you like your steak. For medium-rare, aim for 3-4 minutes per side. (Adjust the cooking time for your preferred doneness).
  4. Add butter and aromatics: In the last minute of cooking, add butter, smashed garlic, and herbs to the skillet. Tilt the pan slightly and use a spoon to baste the steaks with the melted butter.
  5. Rest the steak: Once done, remove the steaks from the skillet and let them rest for 5 minutes to allow the juices to redistribute.

3. Serve:

  • Plate the mashed potatoes and top with the steak.
  • Optionally, drizzle any leftover pan juices or butter over the steak for extra flavor.
  • Garnish with fresh herbs, such as parsley or chives, if desired.

Tips:

  • For extra creamy mashed potatoes, you can add a bit of sour cream or cream cheese.
  • Use a meat thermometer to ensure your steak is cooked to your desired level: 120-130°F for rare, 130-140°F for medium-rare, 140-150°F for medium, and 150°F+ for well done.

Enjoy your classic steak and mashed potatoes! It’s a simple but indulgent meal that’s sure to satisfy.
