Dinner Skillet rolls

Posted on March 30, 2025

Here’s a simple and delicious recipe for Skillet Rolls—soft, fluffy, and golden brown on top. They’re perfect for any meal or special occasion!

Ingredients:

  • 1/4 cup warm water (about 110°F)

  • 1 tablespoon sugar

  • 2 teaspoons active dry yeast

  • 1/2 cup whole milk (warmed)

  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter (melted)

  • 1 teaspoon salt

  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour

  • 1 egg (at room temperature)

  • 2 tablespoons butter (melted, for brushing on top)

Instructions:

1. Activate the Yeast:

  • In a small bowl, combine the warm water, sugar, and yeast. Stir to dissolve and let it sit for about 5 minutes until it becomes frothy.

2. Make the Dough:

  • In a large mixing bowl, combine the milk, melted butter, and salt.

  • Add the yeast mixture and the egg to the bowl, and mix to combine.

  • Gradually add the flour, one cup at a time, stirring until the dough starts to come together.

  • Once it forms a dough, turn it out onto a lightly floured surface and knead for about 5-7 minutes, or until the dough is smooth and elastic. If the dough is sticky, add a little more flour.

3. Let the Dough Rise:

  • Lightly grease a large bowl and place the dough inside. Cover with a clean kitchen towel or plastic wrap.

  • Let the dough rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until it doubles in size.

4. Form the Rolls:

  • Once the dough has risen, punch it down to release the air. Turn the dough out onto a floured surface.

  • Divide the dough into 12 even pieces. Roll each piece into a ball.

  • Arrange the dough balls in a cast-iron skillet (or a greased round baking dish) in a circular pattern, with the rolls slightly touching each other.

5. Second Rise:

  • Cover the skillet with a clean towel and let the rolls rise again for about 30 minutes, until they’ve puffed up.

6. Bake:

  • Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

  • Bake the rolls for 18-22 minutes, or until they are golden brown on top.

  • Remove from the oven and brush the tops with the melted butter for a nice shine and extra flavor.

7. Serve:

  • Allow the rolls to cool for a few minutes before serving. They’re best when served warm!

These Skillet Rolls are soft, buttery, and perfect for any occasion. Enjoy them with soups, stews, or as a side to any meal!
