Tater tots

Here’s a classic and simple Tater Tots recipe—crispy, golden potato bites that are perfect as a snack, side dish, or casserole topping. You can make them from scratch or jazz up frozen ones with seasoning.


🥔 Homemade Tater Tots

🕒 Prep Time: 20 mins | 🍳 Cook Time: 15–20 mins | 🍽️ Makes: 4 servings


Ingredients:

  • 2 medium russet potatoes, peeled

  • 1 tbsp all-purpose flour (or cornstarch for GF)

  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder

  • 1/4 tsp onion powder

  • Salt and pepper to taste

  • 1–2 tbsp grated Parmesan (optional)

  • Oil for frying or spraying (if baking/air frying)


Instructions:

1. Parboil the potatoes:

  • Bring a pot of water to a boil. Add whole peeled potatoes and cook for 6–7 minutes—just until slightly tender (not fully cooked).

  • Drain and let them cool enough to handle.

2. Grate and season:

  • Coarsely grate the cooled potatoes.

  • Place in a towel and squeeze out excess moisture.

  • In a bowl, mix the grated potatoes with flour, garlic powder, onion powder, Parmesan (if using), salt, and pepper.

3. Shape the tots:

  • Take small amounts of the mixture and form into small cylinders (tater tot shape), about 1 inch long.

4. Cook your way:

🍳 Pan-Fry:

  • Heat oil in a skillet (about 1/4 inch deep). Fry tots in batches, turning occasionally, until golden brown (about 3–4 minutes per side). Drain on paper towels.

🔥 Bake:

  • Preheat oven to 425°F (220°C). Place tots on a lined baking sheet, spray with oil. Bake for 20–25 minutes, flipping halfway, until crisp.

💨 Air Fry:

  • Preheat to 400°F (200°C). Spray tots with oil and cook for 10–12 minutes, shaking halfway through, until golden and crispy.


Serving Ideas:

  • With ketchup, ranch, or spicy mayo

  • Topped with cheese and bacon for loaded tots

  • As a crispy topping for casseroles (like a Philly Cheesesteak or breakfast bake)
